Deva-Marie Beck, PhD, RN, DTM is a Canadian American nurse, global citizen and award-winning Florence Nightingale scholar who has worked — for three decades — on citizen advocacy for achieving global health. She has served, since 2006, as International Co-Director of an NGO called Nightingale Initiative for Global Health — nicknamed ‘NIGH.’ In this role, she has traveled to 25 countries and leads NIGH’s work on United Nations briefings, group discussions, workshops, website updates, webinars, feature articles, photojournalism, videos, and keynotes. She has also most recently led campaigns to achieve NIGH’s ‘Special Consultative Status.’ granted by the United Nations Economic & Social Council (UN ECOSOC) in 2018 and t0 establish the multi-language ‘Nightingale Declaration for A Healthy World’ in 2020.
Dr. Beck has since authored and co-authored articles for numerous peer-reviewed journals — including for the American Journal of Nursing (AJN) in 2019 — and textbook chapters, including for ‘A New Era for Global Health: Nursing and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’(Springer, 2018). She has recently achieved the highest-level education Award from Toastmasters International — as a Distinguished Toast Master ‘DTM.’ She now aims to use this credential to develop innovative ways to encourage and engage nurses and concerned citizens to share their voices and tell their stories in the global public arena.
